Aasleagh Falls (Ashleigh Falls)
Aasleagh Falls, a landmark “Signature Discovery Point” on the Wild Atlantic Way is located on the Mayo/Galway border offering a picturesque waterfall vista located on the River Erriff where the river meets Killary Fjord, Ireland’s only true fjord.
Set at the mouth of Killary which is known for its stunning scenery and salmon fishing this is a group of waterfalls with a mountain backdrop and offers popular for riverside walks, picnic area and canyoning. A pathway exists to make the short walk to the waterfall where salmon fishing is very popular.
Although a modest drop of approximately 3.5-4 metres, the falls are most impressive and thunderous after heavy rainfall. Made famous in the film ‘The Field’ the falls were the backdrop for the pivotal fight scene between the Bull McCabe and the American and more recently by Sir David Attenborough filmed a BBC documentary from the falls on the lifecycle of eels.
