Eviction Cottage, Elmhall

Located 10km south of Castlebar in Belcarra Village is the 19th century Eviction Cottage in Elmhall was the scene of the last eviction in 1886 where a family of nine were evicted by their landlord.

This two-room cottage has now been restored as a heritage centre and has been refurbished to how it would have looked before the eviction.  The stone cottage serves as a “frozen in time” location furnished with authentic household implements of the era, offering a ready-made set for period dramas.   Also restored is the ‘tigín’ is a single room built at the time by the neighbours to house the evicted family.

Other interesting contents include a history of local place names, Griffith’s Valuation of 1848, the 1901 census of Elmhall and Belcarra, plus headstone inscriptions from the local Guesdian, Elmhall, Drum and Protestant graveyards.
