Great Western Greenway
The World Class Great Western Greenway is a panoramic 49km route which winds along Clew Bay along the Wild Atlantic Way through ever-changing and beautiful landscapes over Mayo’s mountains, bogs, farmland and dramatic Atlantic coastline.
The cycling and walking trail runs from Westport to Achill Island, taking in Newport and Mulranny following the route of the renowned Westport to Achill railway line which closed in 1937. Access is good with a number of entry points onto the Greenway offering beautiful woodland and access to Mulranny Village where you can find the old Railway Station House.
There has been a 5km extension taking in Achill Sound which features a raised path through wild peat bogs with boardwalks, turf piles, and views of the Nephin Beg Mountains and sheep-dotted farmland. The greenway offers a quintessential Irish landscape of heather and gorse perfect for cinematic, untamed vistas perfect for capturing rugged Irish scenery.
