Newport

A heritage town on Clew Bay, famous for its historic railway viaduct.  Newport’s 18th century design offers broad streets and serves as the midpoint on the Great Western Greenway, Ireland’s most famous off-road cycling and walking trail that runs from Westport to Achill.

With the Black Oak River flowing through the town, it is a hub for outdoor activities like fishing (salmon, trout), walking, and cycling, offering a charming mix of history, natural beauty.

The Seven-Arch Viaduct is an iconic red-sandstone railway bridge which was built in the 1890s and dominates the town centre. Once part of the Westport-Achill railway line it is now a local landmark that visitors can walk beneath or view it from the riverbanks.  Historic Newport House, a Georgian house and gardens are adjoining the town and overlooking the Newport River and quay.
